How do I go about beginning Hockey?

I’ve always loved off ice skating, but I haven’t ever skated on ice before. Hockey is a sport I’m really dedicated to watching, and I’m tired of doing just that. I want to actually play. It’s really expensive to buy stuff, though. I won’t have a chance with my mom, because she’ll just say it’s a waste of her money when I quit. Yeah, it sucks. ://///
So… how can I just train for the sport? (exercises, different methods off ice, etc)
Or are there any cheap stores to buy equipment?

Check for equipment on ebay or craigslist. Or look for clearance sales at sporting goods places, but buy from reputable places that have good gear. If you want, maybe even consider used equipment (Play it Again Sports.) But be warned it might be nasty because it gets pretty sweaty. I would seriously consider new if you can afford it. Then if you don’t want to play, you can try to sell it.

Maybe your mom would be willing to at least get you some skates, so you can try skating. Go to the rink for some public session and just skate around. Even if you don’t have your own skates, you can rent them. Maybe take some skating classes.

If you get a stick (this would be ok to buy used) you can work some stick handling drills with something like a tennis ball in a paved surface. You can just search the internet for all sorts of stick handling drills. Maybe you can even practice on rollerblades. It won’t be the same as ice skates, but it’s better than just standing.

Look into some ice sessions that are just open, “stick and puck.” At least that’s what we call it. You are allowed to bring a stick and puck on the ice, but it’s not any type of organized hockey or drills. You just skate around stick handling, and take some shots on your own. But usually for these session you have to have at least skates and a helmet. But as a beginner, I would suggest wearing as much gear as you can get.
Maybe you will need to buy you own gear, and one piece at a time.

Any off ice exercises are good, especially for the legs. Lifting weights, running, biking, rollerblading (it’s not the same, but will build leg strength.)
